Never enter a cave during rain — flash floods fill caves in minutes.
Wear a mask in enclosed caves.
- Luz / Light: Lleva siempre 2 fuentes de luz. Always carry two light sources (phone alone is not sufficient).
Caves & Caverns in Puerto Rico
Puerto Rico's northern Karst region is one of the most impressive cave systems in the Caribbean. The island is home to the third largest underground river in the world at the Río Camuy Cave Park, where guided tours take you through massive caverns carved over millions of years by acidic rainwater dissolving limestone.
Other must-visit caves include Cueva Ventana in Arecibo — a cave with a dramatic natural window overlooking the lush valley below — and Cueva del Indio, also in Arecibo, where ancient Taíno petroglyphs are carved into sea-facing cliffs. For more adventurous spelunkers, the caves of Aguas Buenas offer wild caving experiences with local guides, while the Karst zone around Camuy, Lares, and Utuado has dozens of lesser-known caves waiting to be explored.
The Karst region's famous mogotes — the distinctive haystack-shaped hills — are a geological landmark visible throughout northern Puerto Rico. Beyond tourism, this limestone formation serves as a critical natural water filtration system for the entire northern coast.
