- Kayak / Paddleboard
- Paseos en Bote
- Natación (Generalmente prohibido)
Waterfalls & Swimming Holes in Puerto Rico
Puerto Rico is home to hundreds of natural swimming holes ("charcos") and waterfalls ("cascadas") scattered across its mountainous interior. From the famous double waterfall at Gozalandia in San Sebastián to hidden freshwater pools in the central mountain range, the island offers some of the best freshwater swimming in the Caribbean.
Popular spots include Charco Azul in Patillas, known for its deep blue water surrounded by tropical forest; Charco El Hippie in Naguabo, a local favorite with rope swings; and the waterfalls of El Yunque National Rainforest including La Coca Falls and La Mina Falls. The rivers of Comerío, Cayey, Jayuya, and Utuado are full of natural pools perfect for a refreshing swim.
Safety first: Flash floods ("golpes de agua") are a real danger in Puerto Rico's rivers. Always check mountain weather before entering the water, wear water shoes with good grip, and leave immediately if water levels start rising. Never swim alone in unfamiliar rivers.
PR Local maintains a growing directory of swimming holes and waterfalls across all 78 municipalities. Download the free app to find spots near you on an interactive map, with photos and directions — all verified by locals who know Puerto Rico's rivers best.
